Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized it wasn't the ideal venue for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
